アメリカで有名な「ラッセルアスレティック」の創業者の息子ラッセル・ジュニアが、高校のフットボールチームに所属していました。
当時着ていた運動着はウール素材で、肌触りも悪く、生地も硬い、汗によって皮膚がすりむけることもありました。
そんな着心地の悪い素材から、コットン素材にすることを父親に提案し、そのアイデアが受け入れられ「スウェット」がこの世に誕生したのです。
1934年には、「リバースウィーブ」という商品が誕生します。
もともとスウェットは、アメリカでスポーツウエアとして着られていた為、こまめに洗濯されていたり、乾燥機にかけるという文化があり、生地へのダメージも大きく、すぐに駄目になっていたようです。
この状況を解決するために、有名ブランド「チャンピオン」が縮まないスエットとして「リバースウィーブ」という商品を誕生させました。
「リバースウィーブ」とは、スウェットが縦に縮まないように、通常は縦織りされていた素材を横織りにすることで、縮みを抑えることができました。
さらに両脇を縦織りしたことで、横に縮むこともなく、形崩れしない最強のスウェットが誕生したのです。
