そんな今回は「アフリカンバティックの魅力」についてお話ししていこうと思います。

・アフリカンバティックとは

アフリカンバティックとは、西アフリカ特有の「ろうけつ染め」したカラフルな布のことで、アフリカの民族衣装としても使用されています。
呼び方は「アフリカンワックス・プリント」「パーニュ」「パーニャ」など色々な呼び名がありますが、全て同じものを指しています。
柄は、植物、動物、昆虫、人などをモチーフにしたユニークなデザインや幾何学模様などが有名で、同じ布には二度と出会えないと言われるほど種類が豊富にあります。
カラフルな色彩と大胆でユニークな模様こそがアフリカンバティックの特徴です。


What is African batik?

African batik is a colorful cloth that is “wax-resist dyeing” peculiar to West Africa, and is also used as an African folk costume.
There are various names such as “African wax print”, “Pagne” and “Pagna”, but they all refer to the same thing.
The patterns are famous for their unique designs and geometric patterns with motifs of plants, animals, insects, people, etc., and there are so many types that it’s said that you will never meet the same cloth again.
African batik has the features of colorful colors and bold and unique patterns.

・アフリカンバティックの歴史

１９世紀、オランダがインドネシアの伝統的な染め物の手法をアフリカで売り込もうとしたことが起源だと言われています。
オランダは当時植民地だったインドネシアの伝統的な染め物の手法「ろうけつ染め」に目を付けました。
そして、ヨーロッパ製のバティックを大量生産してインドネシアに輸出しようとしますが、手染めではないバティックは認めないという理由で輸出に失敗します。
そして次の輸出先を探し、当時植民地だった西アフリカに輸出するとたちまち大人気に。
その後は、名前の通りアフリカ市場で発展していき、アフリカ独自の文化として確立し守られていきました。
実は、かつて日本の京都でもアフリカへ輸出するための布が生産されていたこともあったようです。
日本の藍染に少し似ている気がしていたので、そんな繋がりがあることに納得したと同時に、嬉しい気持ちになりました。


History of African batik

It’s said that it originated in the 19th century when the Netherlands tried to market Indonesia’s traditional dyeing method in Africa.
The Netherlands noticed the traditional Indonesian dyeing technique “wax-resist dyeing”, which was a colony at the time.
Then, they tried to mass-produce European-made batik and export it to Indonesia, but they failed to do it because they didn’t accept non-hand-dyed batik.
Also, when they searched for the next export destination and exported it to West Africa, which was a colony at that time, they immediately became popular.
After that, as the name suggests, it developed in the African market and was established and protected as a culture that was unique to Africa.
In fact, it seems that cloth for export to Africa was once produced in Kyoto, Japan.
I felt that it was a bit like Japanese indigo dyeing, so I was convinced that there was such a connection, and at the same time I felt happy.
