ニットは無地が多いので、柄物が恋しくなってきました。
そんな私が、春に着たくなる柄の一つが「ボーダー」です。
ボーダーは流行り廃りのない柄。１枚持っていると長―く着たくなる1着になるのではないでしょうか。

産業革命の19世紀半ばに、それまでは手仕事で行っていた紡績、染糸業が、当時のSENT JAMES市の市長レオン・ルガレ氏によって工業化されていきました。
そして、モン・サンミッシェルの千潟の牧草で育った、羊からとれる良質な羊毛は、地元の漁師や船乗りたちの大切な仕事着である、マリンセーターを生み出し、実用性を備えた現在のセントジェームスのシャツの原型となっています。
20世紀に入り事業は急成長を遂げました。
マリンスポーツやカジュアルウエアを手掛けるブランドとして発展し、伝統的な手法による、ものづくりの精神は変わらずに、今も引き継がれているのです。

ちなみにこのボーダーは可愛いだけではないのです。
ボーダーは、視界の悪い海上でも、すぐに船乗り達が見つかるようにデザインされていたもの。
これが今現在、ボーダーシャツの原型になったといわれています。
ではセントジェームスのシャツの種類を見ていきましょう。
まず代表的なのが「ウェッソン（ギルド）」ですね。
ウェッソンは、日本の代理店や取扱店による正規輸入品。
ギルドは、並行輸入品のことを指します。
ウェッソンは、ノルマンディーの漁師達の防寒着として親しまれていました。
オールボーダー柄で、素材はコットン100%。
とても肉厚で頑丈な生地です。何度洗濯しても生地が傷んだり、へたることもなく、経年変化が楽しめる素材。サイズ感は防寒着としてつくられたこともあり、少しゆとりのある大きめサイズです。
次にご紹介するのが、「ナヴァル」です。
1850年代にフランス海軍の制服として採用されていました。
こちらは、かの有名画家、ピカソも着用していたシャツとしても有名ですよね。
ナヴァルはパネルボーダー柄。
ウェッソンより糸の番手が細く、薄手なのが特徴で、洗濯を繰り返すことで、生地に柔らかさがでてきます。
海軍の制服、ナヴァルのサイズ感は少しコンパクトで、小さめサイズです。
